The purpose of this study is to examine similarities and differences in multiple aspects of the agricultural sectors and policies in the US Farm Bill and the EU CAP. The objective is to gain a better understanding of agriculture policies in the US and EU by examining their impacts on farmers, agri- food industry, consumers, trade and the environment. In addition, the study contains an analysis with a political approach to US Farm Bill versus the CAP after Health Check in the context of the WTO negotiations. In particular, the study offers some insight analysis how the Farm Bill might work in relation to CAP. Hence it contains:

  • A short analysis of the structure of the agricultural sector in the US and a brief comparison with the EU structure, including macroeconomic and socioeconomic data on:
    • Farm structure
    • Structure of the agricultural population- Age profile
    • Agricultural output and trade (production, imports -exports)
    • Consumption
    • Farmer's income
    • Inflation rates

  • Brief analysis of the Food, Conservation and Energy Act of 2008 (FCEA Farm Bill 2008)

  • Detailed comparison of the Farm Bill 2008 with the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP)

  • Compliance of the Farm Bill 2008 with WTO negotioations
